Our
Philosophy
Working with people to encourage and widen choices by:
• exploring and developing new interests;
• engaging in personal development to achieve a healthier
lifestyle, improve learning opportunities and broaden social networks;
• building skills towards a chosen lifestyle where housing,
volunteering and employment possibilities can be explored; and
• recognising rights and responsibilities in everyday life.
The Adult and Community Support Service operates from the Adult
Resource Centre and offers opportunities at a variety of locations
to people aged 18 and over who have a physical disability. This
may involve accessing the local leisure centre, pub, shops or theatre,
or support to move into purpose-built accommodation.
Whether a person is interested in improving their health and fitness,
attending a course, starting a creative activity or socialising,
the Adult and Community Support Service develops individual programmes
to build skills towards a person’s chosen lifestyle. Each
person is allocated a key worker within the staff team with whom
they meet on a regular basis. People can refer themselves to the
Adult and Community Support Service or be referred by their GP,
other health professional or by their Care Managers.
Therapy
Service
The aim of the Therapy Service is to enable individuals to encompass
therapy into their everyday lives. This is carried out, for example,
by improving posture control, learning new skills and use of practical
equipment and therapeutic activities such as fitness and exercise.
Therapy services are individually tailored to meet specific goals
that the individual has identified as an area in which they wish to
improve.
An initial assessment is undertaken and home visits can be arranged
where short and long-term goal setting is discussed. This will be
followed by regular reviews. Therapies on offer include physiotherapy,
occupational therapy, hydrotherapy, fitness and exercise programmes
and advice on diet and nutrition.

Employment
and Supported Volunteering
As partners in the New Deal for Disabled People we offer support in
finding employment. This is offered in a variety of ways from job
search, approaching possible employers and CV writing, to advice on
interview techniques and practical support to find employment with
follow-up support once employed.
Supported volunteering opportunities are offered to people who have
a long-term goal of paid employment but who initially need to build
confidence and skills. These opportunities are offered at the Centre
or with external organisations.

Leisure and Life
Skills
A variety of courses are run at the Centre or in other suitable locations.
Courses are geared towards individual learning goals and interests
and group sizes are small to ensure an appropriate level of support
is given. In addition, we organise different outings throughout the
year as requested by people accessing the Centre. These include trips
to museums and cinemas, pubs, shops and sport and leisure facilities.
