“He loves the playschemes, he comes home exhausted and happy.”

“The staff always try very hard to meet the needs of the children

at a meeting at White Lodge. I think more activities which are non-creative
such as sensory are needed.”
“She has a great time when she goes to the Little Stars Playgroup!”
“He thoroughly enjoys both Shakers and his time with Helen
and Zulu. He looks
forward to it very much.”

since i.e. notices put up about waiting for door to close.”
“Not enough staff to meet children’s needs. No communication
between different
departments. Staff do not challenge children enough, need to try
to bring them on more.”

“New Green book is nice.”
“Mainly good although this does depend on which member of
staff is doing the handover.”
“I would appreciate more feedback as to exactly what he has
done and what he enjoyed or didn’t enjoy.”
“I think perhaps more things could be mentioned about your
child instead of leaving to TAC meeting …when something could
have been happening for a couple of months.”
“Improving with the pre-printed sheets.”
“Good idea about booklets.”
“I prefer a written comment to the pre-printed book.”
“Yellow book is good idea but often not filled fully.”

2a)
ii) Can you describe their role?
Comments

(as this is who I always contact) – Helen is part-time so
all is cc’d to Mary.”
“Overseeing her care.”
“Seems to be the person who liaises with other professionals
within White Lodge.”

date.”
“Mary Threakall.”
“Co-ordinate hours and dates and sort out any problems or
changes that may arise.”
“Liaison between us (parents) and Link Carers – if we
needed it, checking out and maintaining the statutory, formal side
of things.”
“Not sure.”
“For playschemes I assume this is Gill Tuck? For Treetops
he hasn’t started yet so I am still learning who does what.”
“The first port of call for any queries we may have at all
about him and the services he is getting or worries we may have.”

“is there a difference? Did not know there was one!”
“Actually thought they were the same person, so apologise
if we’ve burdened our Key Worker.”
“Key Worker is Nursery contact.”
“Oh dear – confused now – I thought that Helen
was the Prime Contact, but maybe she is the Key Worker?”
“I know who his Key Worker will be at Treetops.”
“Yes, I think.”
2b) Do you believe the staff/link carers understand your
child’s needs and are adequately trained to deal with them?
Yes: 44
No: 1
Comments
“They are given all the relevant information on my child and
I think they tend to go by that.”
“Staff need to challenge children more in order to bring them
on. Problem solving often left for parents, who would appreciate
positive suggestion from staff.”
“Most of the time.”
“Although occasionally haven’t changed son’s incontinence
pads as often as they should have.”
“At present yes, but he goes back on oxygen – I will
have nowhere in place for respite as Treetops still has no trained
nurse on board.”
“Still to experience Treetops.”
“They are slow to be trained using emergency medication eg
rectal diazepam/buccal midazolam.”
“They know her very well and understand her needs.”
“But, it is sometimes hard to see - if we make appointments
with physiotherapist her guidance is not followed in the nursery.”
“Our link carers are THE BEST!!! We are so lucky they love
our daughter so much and are so brilliant with her.”
“Particularly the regular domiciliary workers.”
“But do need to be more aware of ‘extreme’ behaviours
and how to deal with them.”
“Very good understanding of my son’s needs and always
listens to what I advise.”
“Yes, when he had a major seizure just before Christmas I
was contacted immediately and the ambulance arrived shortly afterwards,
one member of staff kindly drove my car to St Peters. I would add
that a follow up ‘phone call to see how we were would have
been appreciated, although when he went back to playscheme in Feb
holiday we were asked.”

“Some of the staff are more efficient than others and I have
experienced communication problems among staff.”
“Don’t really get support from Twinks Staff –
not what Twinks is about, so wouldn’t want them to spend time
supporting me/other parents – the Twinks staff are there for
the children!”

with other workers.”

be on the decline?”
“The playscheme activities are well thought out and balanced.”
“What about activity weekend – residential?”
“More youth groups.”
“(This does NOT apply to domiciliary) I would suggest that
the youth playscheme (at Shepperton) had more age appropriate and
more interesting off-site activities. Have tried this playscheme
a few times but although staff and venue very good, the activities
are not appropriate for my son’s needs.”
“Maybe swimming??? Or a day trip could be arranged.”

“Shepperton Youth Centre is an ideal facility within easy
reach.”
“Yes because I have organised it.”
“There is no wheelchair egress from the Treetops play room
and no way to isolate the immediate rear garden from the large garden.”
“For Little Stars the facilities at Treetops are a big improvement
on the previous room in the Children’s Centre eg there is
a soft play area, toy cupboard, carpeting, more space. We don’t
use the sensory room so much, but the soft play has partly taken
that place. Not so many people use the hydro either, but it is still
available. It is great to have a cot available.”

Comments
“More Makaton courses for parents and staff please.”
“More respite.”
“Only if I could get Domiciliary Funding.”
“More respite, preferably more nights. The chance to have
a weekend of respite would be amazing but seems like it is easier
to get blood out of a stone.”
“Domiciliary at Family Links or Rockets.”
“I would like to have more information about the services
that we can use.”
“Not sure.”
“Just wish the playschemes i.e. White Lodge Challengers and
Crossroads would liaise re summer play dates as most families have
the last two weeks of August without much help!!”
“By having a few more days respite a month would be very beneficial.”
“Private care but now set prices have been fixed instead of
donation it is far too expensive.”
“Is there any way my daughter could be given a 10 –
3 or later on a Saturday. She is home educated by us parents and
apart from Link Leisure in school holidays (plus obviously Jackie
2 hours Wednesdays), she is at home with me and the family (dad
and sister) all day and every day. I recently have found this exhausting,
especially since May my husband has spent 4 weeks on and off away
working abroad. He also works many weekends and does lots of overtime
at weekends as well. We have been offered a placement at a school
but because of her dependency and behavioural needs the school have
stated that a home/school link person who knows and works with her
at home is needed at school to re-integrate this, one will do. I
feel solely responsible at all times for her and a day just for
her sister and myself would be amazing.”
“We would like her to attend for overnight stays but I am
told no vacancies exist.”
“Everything you are doing is excellent.”
“Future planning re education and starting school.”
“Is there anything you could do to support siblings?”
“Would be nice to have a weekend club or after school club
at White Lodge where children know.”
“I’m concerned about what will happen when she is too
old for Twinks.”
“You are already doing a great job – thank you!”
“Regular residential activity weekend breaks?”
“Not at present, but more overnight at weekends!”
“Better youth schemes for teenagers and young adults with
autism 16+ with appropriate activities.”
“We’re very happy with the support we get as our daughter
isn’t too bad.”

Do you have any suggestions as to ways in which future audits can

Suggestions
“More confidentiality

“Although this is another form it is quite easy.”
“Sorry, been thinking but brain dead.”
“Perhaps on line via your website?”
7e) Any further comments?
"As a lot
of the children cannot talk would be really nice if the staff could
be available for few questions at the end/or beginning of the day.
Parents often feel unease to approach very busy looking staff as
not many of them present."
"If staff notice a problem i.e. with potty, they should speak
to physio or O.T. person about it and make sure it is dealt with
and inform parent."
"There is a lack of communication between different departments,
should get together and work together."
"Staff should be braver in challenging the children, perhaps
working more closely with physio and with parents, not get stuck
doing things the same way."
"Parents have noticed that the staff is not as enthusiastic
and happy as they used to be and that is a real shame, as they are
all great people, maybe they feel under-staffed, under pressure?
Or just in need of a summer holiday.”
“Always
a good service from you prior to schemes and during.”
“Would
it not be more appropriate to have confirmed 6 weekly appointments
to see Andrew Tagg if your child has CP or requires special shoes/splints.
It would take the stress out of wondering whether you are trying
to squeeze your child’s foot in a splint for example too small
for them. One last thing… overall we are incredibly grateful
[he] has a place at White Lodge. The staff are incredibly helpful
and kind and my son obviously loves it which is the main and most
important thing at the end of the day. My thanks to Lesley and her
team for helping my boy so very much.”
“Just
so grateful for the services provided – reliable, professional
, and most important thing, fun for [him] and suited to his needs.
The staff go way beyond the call of duty, have endless patience
and a great sense of humour. They give us the little breaks that
we need as a family. Thank you!”
“I am
very appreciative of the support I have received from the domiciliary
service and the care that has been shown both to us and parents
and B.”
“We have
only just started using the domiciliary service from White Lodge
in the past few weeks but so far it has met our daughter’s
needs and is working well!”
“A valuable
service which has kept our family together.”
We live outside
Surrey on the border, in our own County we would have had to share
physio sessions etc, we contacted White Lodge Centre, there is much
more available and we are very grateful”
“I have
always been very happy with the service given. The one suggestion
I would have is that as there have been a lot of new staff joining
Treetops I don’t know a lot of them. It would be great if
you could send us a picture of new staff and their name so we would
know who was taking care of our children. Many children arrive on
transport and therefore parents do not actually visit Treetops that
much. I was also surprised to see that Comets has gone up to £12
– I think this should have been brought to our attention before
the booking forms were competed as this increase equates to another
£20 for the summer holidays. I save £4 every week to
cover the cost of Comets so I will now not have enough money. I
also know of one other parent who has said she won’t be able
to send her child on all the booked days now because of the cost
rise. My son loves going to Treetops and I would like to take this
opportunity to thank you for providing this service as I am sure
there are many other parents who like myself rely on Treetops to
help maintain our sanity.”
“it is
such a shame that the provision ends at the age of 12. It would
be lovely if it went through to the age of 18.”
“As noted
earlier I can only at the current time give my feedback for holiday
playscheme, upon my visit to Treetops I would like to advise that
I was very impressed with Matthew and all the other staff were very
friendly and helpful. Treetops is very clean and a wonderful enriched
environment which I am sure that [he] will enjoy in the very near
future. On a low note – [he] was diagnosed with ASD at White
Lode, we as a family found the whole procedure dreadful, with very
little sensitivity, and information being given to us. I understand
and see that things are greatly improving which is very promising.”
“Excellent
centre, can’t praise the staff enough. Don’t give just
our son the best future possible but totally support myself and
my husband. Staff are always ready to listen and give advice where
appropriate. Only wish you had school provision after Nursery. Thank
you.”
“I cannot
fault the help we get for our son, he is always happy to come to
Twinks 2.”
“Have
Twinks and Twinks II merged? I thought the point of Twinks II was
so that older children would be together, making it possible to
keep age-appropriate activities/outings for the children. They seem
to be mixed again, which must surely limit what can be done? Very
grateful to have Twinks – we have the perfect amount, and
it is great for us! Family Link is just FANTASTIC!”
“It isn’t
just the fact that [he] enjoys each and every one of the services
to which he is entitled, nor that these give his sister and me such
a welcome break, it is that I can relax knowing that he is being
cared for by people who have his best interests at heart and in
whom I have complete confidence. Thank you to everyone.”
“Have
used family link for several years – but for about 2 years
have no one that can match our two teenage boys.”
“Having
regular meetings face to face with working party of parents who
use White Lodge and whose children have a wide range of disabilities
and use a range of activities. I have filled this form in regarding
the domiciliary service only – I cannot fault the domiciliary
service my son receives, or the level of care he receives from his
wonderful team of helpers. They are my son’s friends and my
lifeline and they enable us to continue coping as a family. I cannot
thank Mary and Helen and co enough. We have tried the youth scheme
a few times (with a helper) which was not very successful due to
the activities not being appropriate for many children with autism.
I feel a lot more could be done with this, with a lot more planning
of more outings such as Disability Challengers youth scheme, which
has much more appropriate and realistic activities. We need much
more activities for young adults with autism and complex needs etc
that are 16+. The playscheme at Shepperton is a lovely venue and
group of people, but all activities are on site. It would be good
to have a mix of quiet days on site and active days off site, we
recognise that there are young people with other disabilities there
too, but those with autism need an outing most days. I am not the
only parent who thinks that. There is great potential for the playschemes
if we go along the lines of Disability Challengers. I would happily
pay for such outings and would also do fundraising to enable them
to go ahead. Suggested additional activities include: Donutting,
bowling at the Big Apple, Pizza Hut, fruit picking, trampolining,
the BA Experience, golf driving range, sailing and canoeing at Thames
Young Mariners, other water type activities, travelling on a train,
Watercress Line, picnic at Bushy Park, Woking Leisure Centre, going
to the pub.”
“A brilliant
place, children perfectly looked after, all their needs are met
and Treetops home book is very well done. Very helpful, especially
the children’s participation activities, which are well planned,
very much ability orientated. Food’s good! My child always
says she has had a good time when picked up, she loves helping the
staff, we have never had a problem”.
